EA's $55 Billion Buyout: Is This the End of Gaming as We Know It?

Amazon is shaking things up by relaunching its Luna cloud gaming service for Prime subscribers, but don’t get too excited just yet—if your internet connection is as reliable as a flip phone in a hurricane, you might want to sit this one out. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Game Pass is taking a nosedive in value as they decide that $30 a month is the sweet spot for a subscription that used to feel more like a steal. Oh, and Ubisoft has thrown in the towel on their old brand, rebranding to Vantage Studios while juggling layoffs like a circus act—because, you know, nothing says “we care about our employees” quite like axing their jobs. Speaking of layoffs, Funcom is also jumping on the bandwagon, cutting staff despite having a million-seller with Dune Awakening. And then there’s EA, who just decided that going private is the solution to their sea of financial troubles—because who wouldn’t want to drown in a $20 billion debt, right? Buckle up, folks; the gaming industry is a wild ride this week.

Takeaways:

  • Amazon Luna is getting a makeover, combining it with Prime subscriptions, which is a refreshing twist.
  • Microsoft's Game Pass is now more expensive and less appealing, turning it into a questionable investment for gamers.
  • Ubisoft's new Vantage Studios is a desperate attempt to save their major franchises amidst disappointing game performances.
  • Funcom and Starbreeze's layoffs highlight the harsh realities of the gaming industry, where success doesn't always equal job security.
  • Battlefield 6 is poised for a strong launch with impressive pre-order numbers, reviving hope after previous missteps.
  • EA's $55 billion buyout spells trouble ahead, especially with the looming threat of layoffs and studio closures due to massive debt.

Companies mentioned in this episode:

Speaker A

And welcome to a new episode of Digital Coffee Gaming Brew.

Speaker A

And I'm your host Brett Dyster.

Speaker A

And this week we're going to be talking about Amazon relaunching Amazon Luna Xbox.

Speaker A

Well, they really stepped in it with their Game Pass subscription, which isn't making anybody happy.

Speaker A

Also, Ubisoft is changing the name of their new subsidiary to Vantage Studios.

Speaker A

And what that's going to be a part of Funcom and Starbreeze Layoffs.

Speaker A

Because it's the gaming industry, there's always layoffs, but it seems like a lot.

Speaker A

Battlefield 6 stats, we're going to see how much the pre orders have actually sold and then more about the Game Pass and the season one as well.

Speaker A

Marvel Rivals season 4.5.

Speaker A

And then we're going to be talking about the EA buyout because I didn't really get a chance to talk about it because well, it happened after I recorded this or last week I should say.

Speaker A

So we talking about that, what it actually means and why you need to actually understand the whole implication of it.

Speaker A

Is it good, is it bad?

Speaker A

Should we really care that much?

Speaker A

But let's get on with the show.

Speaker A

Mmm, that's good.

Speaker A

All right.

Speaker A

I hope you're having a fantastic weekend.

Speaker A

But first off is Amazon is relaunching its Amazon Luna service later this year.

Speaker A

The relaunch will feature a new design and new features.

Speaker A

Rotating library of games will be available to Amazon prime subscribers through Luna's cloud service.

Speaker A

Now this was made on a post on their Amazon game site.

Speaker A

So basically what this is going to be is that if you're a Prime user, you can actually use Amazon Luna.

Speaker A

Before, when it first came out, there was a separate subscription for this and then there was your Prime.

Speaker A

So if you wanted to use Amazon Luna, you had to do a separate subscription for it.

Speaker A

This time around they're merging it together.

Speaker A

And with prime users you don't actually have to buy another separate subscription.

Speaker A

Unlike let's say we when you're watching a TV show on Amazon prime and you have to upgrade to get no ads, very annoying.

Speaker A

But this one you don't have to.

Speaker A

This is actually the reverse of what Microsoft is doing with Game Pass, which is a good thing if you like Luna.

Speaker A

I really don't care about Luna, so it doesn't really matter to me if they have some good games, I may try it out.

Speaker A

But unless you have really good Internet, it doesn't really matter because you have to have that type of, type of no latency thing.

Speaker A

And if you don't have good Internet.

Speaker A

It doesn't really matter how good the game looks, it's just not going to be great at all.

Speaker A

But it is a good sign that Amazon is actually listening, providing feedback and providing extra value for the prime subscription than what Microsoft has done, which we'll be talking about soon.

Speaker A

So good news for Amazon Primers, prime users and it's going to be, well, unfortunate news for Microsoft Game Pass and Xbox fans in general.

Speaker A

Which leads me hint to Microsoft has revamped their tier of Game Pass so the ultimate, which was priced at $20 a month, is going to be $30 a month.

Speaker A

Ultimate is the only tier that provides day one access to new games, including the Outer Worlds 2 and Call of Duty Black Ops 7.

Speaker A

The ultimate tier now includes access to Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft plus Classic.

Speaker A

The Game Pass standard has been renamed to Premium and is priced at $15 a month now, including PC games.

Speaker A

The new first party games will be added to Premium within a year of their launch, excluding Call of Duty titles.

Speaker A

Premium is not for you if you love Call of Duty and then the Xbox game Pass Core will just be called Essential and still be priced at $10 per month, primarily offering access to online multiplayer.

Speaker A

The price hike is presented by Microsoft as reflecting expanding catalog and new benefits and it's actually not going very well for them.

Speaker A

Now I will caveat.

Speaker A

You can actually get the PC subscription service, which is about 1650amonth, and play Call of Duty Black Ops 7 on your PC for the early access beta, which is probably the best price for all of this if you have a PC.

Speaker A

If you don't, none of this is a good price.

Speaker A

This is actually not a good look for them at all.

Speaker A

They kind of just hurt themselves in the Game Pass as being a low cost alternative to Netflix.

Speaker A

Now it's more expensive than Netflix and you really don't get that much value of it I mean, unless you're playing Fortnite, which I don't do.

Speaker A

Unless you care about the Ubisoft plus Classic catalog, which, okay, it really isn't that great of a deal anymore to be honest.

Speaker A

That's why a lot of people have decided to unsubscribe to it because there is no reason to actually get this anymore.

Speaker A

You might as well just buy the games that you want flat out because it'll be cheaper in the long run than doing this now for PC.

Speaker A

It's actually not a bad deal, but that's for now because we don't know how much this is going to raise too.

Speaker A

So for now I would stick with the Xbox Game Pass PC side of it because it's still under $20 a month.

Speaker A

So you're still getting a pretty decent deal and you can actually play right now Call of duty Black Ops 7 early access beta.

Speaker A

That is the only best way of doing it that you don't have to.

Speaker A

It's about half the cost, a little over.

Speaker A

It's a little under half the cost of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Speaker A

But the ultimate is only a good deal if you actually use everything.

Speaker A

And if you don't, it's really expensive.

Speaker A

And I don't really understand why they just upped it $10 a month.

Speaker A

Like they keep the video that came out says we're listening to feedback.

Speaker A

I'm like, so you listen to feedback and the feedback told you that we want it more expensive.

Speaker A

Nobody said that.

Speaker A

That's why yesterday or Wednesday was it when they actually announced this, there was a massive unsubscribe to Game Pass.

Speaker A

And it looks like either by just too many people doing it or by Microsoft trying to hinder people from unsubscribing that the window or the.

Speaker A

Or the website was not working very well.

Speaker A

But I mean, I just don't understand the $30 a month.

Speaker A

It just doesn't make much sense to me because you're not adding that much value to it.

Speaker A

If it was like, hey, we'll give you all of the DLCs and everything with it within the game, then it would make more sense if we add day one releases for EA and Ubisoft makes more sense, but it doesn't make any sense when it's kind of a, here's some stuff.

Speaker A

Not everybody likes this, but this just kind of quote unquote adds value.

Speaker A

So they're in a heap of trouble.

Speaker A

And I don't think they understand how terribly they messed up on this one.

Speaker A

I get that buying Activision Blizzard was expensive, but don't always put it on the customer.

Speaker A

Sometimes you got to eat the cost a little bit.

Speaker A

And I don't think they want.

Speaker A

They aren't willing to eat the cost because they don't want to upset the shareholders.

Speaker A

But if you piss off the customers too much, then the shareholders are going to be mad anyways.

Speaker A

So they're in a very precarious thing that I don't think they know how to get out of.

Speaker A

Except they might have to just keep the names but bring down price again.

Speaker A

That's the only way it's going to work.

Speaker A

I don't think they're going to do that.

Speaker A

But that would be the smart move.

Speaker A

All right, moving on.

Speaker A

Ubisoft has established a new subsidiary named Vantage Studios, which is part funded by Tencent.

Speaker A

Vantage Studios will manage Ubisoft major franchises including Assassin's Creed, Far Cry and the company is structured to to include multiple internal studios with a total of 2300 employees located in various cities including Montreal, Quebec, Sophia, Barcelona, Sherbrooke and Sanui.

Speaker A

The aim of Vantage Studios is to allow individual teams to make decisions based on industry trends and audience preference.

Speaker A

The Tencent has invested 1.16 billion billion for a 25% stake in Ven Studios while remaining in an advisory role.

Speaker A

The there's two co founders, one of it is the CEO of Ubisoft, which is a little suspect.

Speaker A

Ubisoft Intensa announced this partnership in March of 2025 with discussions about the deal starting in January.

Speaker A

Recent entries of Assassin's Creed series have performed well, but other titles like Star Wars Outlaws and Prince of Persia Lost Crown have underperformed.

Speaker A

And this is the main crux.

Speaker A

I don't know if Assassin's Creed Shadows really did perform well because to this day I've never seen an actual sales number.

Speaker A

It's only been people played game, which doesn't really make much sense to me, but that's where we're at.

Speaker A

Usually when you highlight that your game sold well, you highlight the sales numbers.

Speaker A

You don't highlight the amount of people played because that, that doesn't really showcase anything.

Speaker A

But this is where we're at so far.

Speaker A

It's a shame because Prince of Persia Lost Crown was pretty good.

Speaker A

The Prince of Persia 2D side scroller was actually a really good game.

Speaker A

Star Wars Outlaws not so good.

Speaker A

There were some interesting things like I played because I got a massive deal on it, but it just wasn't good.

Speaker A

Like I understand that you could knock out a stormtrooper, but you can't move the body.

Speaker A

So you knock it out and there it is.

Speaker A

And I'm like, you guys made Assassin's Creed right?

Speaker A

There is a way to move bodies, right?

Speaker A

Like it was.

Speaker A

There were some weird design philosophies that just didn't make sense.

Speaker A

And then the final update finally allowed you to shoot on the on your speeder bike, which when it first came out you couldn't do it.

Speaker A

You had to do that little like power up where you can lock onto like three or five different people and destroy them.

Speaker A

And I was like, why can't I just shoot?

Speaker A

There was a lot of weird things.

Speaker A

So and then the, the character model of the lead Protagonist just looked like a cross between a feminized, like a female and a male.

Speaker A

It looked weird, it didn't look natural.

Speaker A

So there were, there was a lot of issues with it.

Speaker A

So I get it, they're a business and they're trying to save their business.

Speaker A

But you could have saved your business without being weird about it.

Speaker A

But this is where we're at, so I'm not too hopeful about this.

Speaker A

But it should be interesting to see what they come up with because the last Far Cry was not good.

Speaker A

I. I finally played it and beat it and it was very annoying to play.

Speaker A

I like Far Cry 5 better than 6, to be honest with you.

Speaker A

And the subsequent ones were better.

Speaker A

I still think Far Cry and Far Cry 2 were probably the two best of the series because it was 2 especially was very interesting game.

Speaker A

3 was good, 4 was okay, 5 was good, and then 6 was just not good at all.

Speaker A

That's when like some of the weird ideologies started sprouting up into the game.

Speaker A

But that's where we're at.

Speaker A

All right.

Speaker A

Funcom, the developer of Dune Awakening, has laid off undisclosed numbers of staff.

Speaker A

The announcement was made in a statement with gamers, industry biz and Dune Awakening was Funcom's biggest release in its 32 year history.

Speaker A

It launched in June, but within its first month Duno Awakening sold over 1 million copies.

Speaker A

So it's interesting that it did really, really well.

Speaker A

But layoffs.

Speaker A

So is it not really hitting that peak that they wanted to?

Speaker A

I kind of started playing it, started stopped playing it a little bit.

Speaker A

I need to get back into it, but I lost all my stuff so I might just have to redo it, which is fine.

Speaker A

It's not that big of a deal.

Speaker A

But it's a fun game, it's an interesting game.

Speaker A

It's very Dune like and you feel it.

Speaker A

But the combat is very much lacking in that department.

Speaker A

I just, it's not very fun or engaging as I would like it, but it is more of an mmo so you kind of expect that type of thing.

Speaker A

The base building and like the atmosphere is great, but that's really what all that is good about it.

Speaker A

So should be interesting to see if they actually do anything about it or if they just do nothing about it.

Speaker A

But I mean there was a newest update for it, new DLC or expansion pack or whatever they call it.

Speaker A

So should be interesting to see how well players reacted to that one specifically.

Speaker A

All right.

Speaker A

And more recent layoff news.

Speaker A

Starbreeze has canceled its co op Dungeons and Dragons game, known Internally as Project Baxter, which was announced in 2023.

Speaker A

The cancellation will result in approximately 44 layoffs within the company.

Speaker A

The the CEO stated that the decision was difficult but necessary and aims to help return the company to positive cash flow by 2026.

Speaker A

Starbreeze is shifting focus to its Payday franchise, particularly Payday 3, which is being developed into a quote unquote modern live engagement game.

Speaker A

Really don't know what that means.

Speaker A

It's just a bunch of word salad, gobbly goop.

Speaker A

He also described Beatty as one of the most iconic IPS in gaming.

Speaker A

Well, I don't know about that, but it is, but it is fun and it is, it does have its moments, but the most iconic, I mean you're reaching like Wolfenstein, Doom, maybe like Star wars, some of the Star wars franchises, but like iconic.

Speaker A

I just don't know about that.

Speaker A

Like you have to put a Quake, Doom, Wolfenstein, like Command and Conquer, Starcraft, Overwatch.

Speaker A

Like I don't know if it's that level, but it could be.

Speaker A

I mean it's all unfortunate, but they're really trying to focus on it.

Speaker A

The problem is, is that Payday 2 still has way more people playing the game than Payday 3, so they have a long road ahead of them and it should be very interesting to see what they do with it.

Speaker A

All right, moving on to Battlefield 6 is set to launch on October 10th and as it say there is about has received about 1.7 million pre orders.

Speaker A

So the game is projected to sell 5 million copies within the first week.

Speaker A

So that might be one of the best selling Battlefield titles we've seen so far.

Speaker A

The beta was fun, cannot deny, brought back a lot of the old school Battlefield like philosophies back because Battlefield 2042 did not do very well at all.

Speaker A

I still, I mean I'm trying to go through it, but I just don't want to play the game to get the skins.

Speaker A

I'm like, oh, I gotta play this game to get the skins.

Speaker A

Why?

Speaker A

And I might have missed out on it.

Speaker A

But you know what, it's fine.

Speaker A

I mean it happens.

Speaker A

Kind of wish the season pass was a little bit shorter, but whatever.

Speaker A

Like I just, I just couldn't do it anymore.

Speaker A

After a while I'm like, I, I can't play this game.

Speaker A

Like the new map, which is really the old map of Battlefield 5 was, was fun, but I just don't have the heart for me for doing all these weird stuff to get skins but teach his own.

Speaker A

Also, News of Battlefield 6 is the season one content, so there will be about.

Speaker A

Each season will consist about three monthly content updates and the first update, named Rogue Ops is scheduled for October 28th.

Speaker A

So you have 18 days to play and then the season one comes out.

Speaker A

Which is quite remarkable given that it took a while just for Battlefield 2042 to have anything.

Speaker A

So this should be interesting to see how well this is received.

Speaker A

So Rogobs will introduce Blackwell Fields map a new game mode called Strike Point.

Speaker A

Is that really new?

Speaker A

I feel like Strike Point was on Battlefield 1, but maybe it was a different name.

Speaker A

Maybe.

Speaker A

Maybe I'm off a new vehicle, new gear and weapons.

Speaker A

New Weapons include the SOR 300 SC Carbine, the GH22 Sidearm, the Mini Scout Sniper rifle, and a new low power variable optical scope.

Speaker A

Blackwell Fields is set in the California Badlands and involves players combating packs, Armada double agents and attacking NATO targets.

Speaker A

The Strike Point game mode is designed for a.

Speaker A

No, it's not.

Speaker A

This is new, actually designed for a 4v4 gameplay, focusing on tactical play and realm based objectives with no response.

Speaker A

Interesting.

Speaker A

Could be actually an interesting gameplay mode.

Speaker A

We'll see when it actually comes out.

Speaker A

But I'm kind of excited for this because they're already out of the gate.

Speaker A

Said we already have season one ready.

Speaker A

It's coming out in 18 days.

Speaker A

Once Battlefield 6 comes out, you got new weapons, new maps, new game mode.

Speaker A

Have fun.

Speaker A

Way better than what, 2042.

Speaker A

When 2042 launched, it's like, yeah, we'll fix all this stuff that we didn't actually do a good job with.

Speaker A

And that took it feels like a year.

Speaker A

So this is already a really good sign that they know what they're doing, they have what they need to be successful.

Speaker A

And I'm all for it, like I'm all for it to see what they produce because man, battlefield 2042, I really try to love that game, but I, I just could not love that game.

Speaker A

I don't know, it was probably because I played it at launch and when you played at launch, it just really turned you off.

Speaker A

I mean they turned it around, but it took a while to turn it around.

Speaker A

Plus with how open everything was, it just wasn't a good thing.

Speaker A

And I mean the hovercraft scaling buildings was a little weird.

Speaker A

I mean there was a lot of weird bugs, glitches that happened and I know they kept that one in the game because it really wasn't much.

Speaker A

But I mean, call downs for vehicles.

Speaker A

Interesting.

Speaker A

But I would have only left it to like light transport vehicles and everything else you had to actually get at the base because it made for some frustrating things of like calling down like AA on top of a building.

Speaker A

I mean, it just made it for just like rough things to do.

Speaker A

And so I'm all in favor of what they're doing here.

Speaker A

I think they actually have a good plan, seems like.

Speaker A

But we'll see.

Speaker A

We'll also see when it actually fully releases how well it's optimized.

Speaker A

It was really well optimized in the beta and that was a.

Speaker A

And that was the newest build of the game, I'm pretty sure.

Speaker A

So I'm wondering how well it's going to be when it actually fully launches with Firestorm and with the bigger maps and finally trying the bigger maps.

Speaker A

I heard they're pretty good.

Speaker A

I heard Firestorm is what Firestorm was when it came out in Battlefield three and was redone in Battlefield four.

Speaker A

Now we're getting in Battlefield six.

Speaker A

I'm.

Speaker A

I'm waiting for Caspian Border to come back again because that has already had one remaster.

Speaker A

Why not do two?

Speaker A

I mean, if they want to look at some of the Battlefield 2 maps, they were pretty good.

Speaker A

Look at Battlefield.

Speaker A

Bad Company 2 had some pretty good maps.

Speaker A

Look at Battlefield 1 has some pretty good maps as well.

Speaker A

So also just do new ones too.

Speaker A

I'm fine with that.

Speaker A

Either way, I'm fine with it.

Speaker A

As long as you just make really good maps that flow well and you have cover for and that you have room to.

Speaker A

To maneuver as well, I'm fine with that.

Speaker A

All right, moving on to Marvel.

Speaker A

Rival season 4.5 launches on October 10th.

Speaker A

Well, that's going to be a big day.

Speaker A

The update will introduce Daredevil as a new Duelist.

Speaker A

Cross platform progression support will begin with this update, but it will initially be available only to invite players.

Speaker A

General access to cross progression support will be available with the launch of Season five.

Speaker A

So it should be interesting to see.

Speaker A

It looks like Daredevil is going to be interesting Duelists.

Speaker A

Unfortunately, it's a new duelist and not a new healer.

Speaker A

I think Strategist or Vanguard, because I mean we just had a new Vanguard, but it'd be nice to have a.

Speaker A

Not a new character be a duelist for a while.

Speaker A

There are a lot of duelists, but I know it's easier to make duelist than probably is to make Vanguard or Strategist.

Speaker A

But we do need more of those.

Speaker A

We do need more options for the tank and healer role because he is very much lacking in those departments.

Speaker A

And that's unfortunate because there needs to be more of Those.

Speaker A

I know we got Ultron as the last new strategist, but he was kind of like a cross between a duelist and strategist.

Speaker A

He doesn't heal as effectively as the other ones.

Speaker A

And whatever the other one was, the tank, the vanguard, which she flies and stuff, I forget the name, but that one looks all right.

Speaker A

I haven't played in a while, so should be interesting to see how well people figure all that stuff out and if it's actually going to be any good for Daredevil and if it's actually going to be an overpowered character or not.

Speaker A

I mean, they always show the videos, but the videos always amplify what could or could not be.

Speaker A

So we'll see.

Speaker A

I heard Thor is really, really good right now, so should be fun.

Speaker A

All right.

Speaker A

And so main thing is going to be about EA going private.

Speaker A

That's right.

Speaker A

EA has undergone a $55 billion buyout which will take the company private.

Speaker A

The deal is led by Saudi Arabia's public investment fund, private equity firm Silverlake, and Jared Kushner's investment firm, Affinity Partners.

Speaker A

Approximately two thirds of the purchase price is being fronted by these entities.

Speaker A

With 20 billion being absorbed as debt on EA books, it's massive.

Speaker A

The acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of EA's 2027 fiscal year.

Speaker A

Of course, there's concerns by the media and bioware.

Speaker A

Apparently no one else is talking about these concerns.

Speaker A

But besides BioWare, the once renowned developer that's kind of been lambasted for the last few releases, they've done so so far, nothing's going to be unchanged.

Speaker A

But that will not remain forever because, well, first of all, 20 billion in debt for EA is not a good look.

Speaker A

And they're going to have to figure out either to shutter some studios, let go of some studios, or.

Speaker A

Yeah, I mean, those really are the two options they've got.

Speaker A

So Mark Dura, a former project director and executive producer, discusses the potential impact of it.

Speaker A

So we did discuss it and he basically said that, well, BioWare shouldn't, should not be changing their very progressive views because if it does, there will be a lot of backlash.

Speaker A

Well, well, first of all, Anthem failed.

Speaker A

That was your first mistake.

Speaker A

Then Dragon Age, the Veil Guard spectacularly failed, and that was your little progressive game.

Speaker A

So I think you should stop with the political messaging, might help and go back to making good games again.

Speaker A

The reason why people love Dragon Age Origins, because it didn't really have that big of a political messaging.

Speaker A

Yes, you're always going to have some.

Speaker A

No doubt about It.

Speaker A

I am not surprised that there's some.

Speaker A

But there has to be a line between how much you invest in these political messaging and how much your audience responds to it.

Speaker A

Now everybody's afraid of there's gonna be less queer content.

Speaker A

And I'm like, yes, there should be less of that because I don't want to play that.

Speaker A

And a lot of people agree with me.

Speaker A

So Mr. Mark, as he mentioned that EA Studios have that have not released successful titles including bioware, express uncertainty about how the Saudi investment fund might influence the studio and in its investment, particularly regarding political messaging.

Speaker A

He suggested that the bio could lead to layoffs and studio closers due to EA's looming 20 billion in debt.

Speaker A

Of course it will.

Speaker A

Big debt.

Speaker A

EA committed to its employees that there will be no immediate changes.

Speaker A

Of course not.

Speaker A

The debt hasn't come in yet to jobs or teams following the $55 billion buyout, which includes again the $20 billion in debt.

Speaker A

But here's the issue.

Speaker A

EA has not been doing well.

Speaker A

It started with, like I said, it started with Anthem and then it went to battlefield 2042.

Speaker A

Both massively failed.

Speaker A

And then Dragon Age Veil Guard finally released.

Speaker A

Massively failed.

Speaker A

You had three failures in like what, three or four years?

Speaker A

These are three big tent pole games.

Speaker A

Like, you propped up Anthem for being like this like live service open world game where you're in mechs and it had its moments of being fun, but it had a lot of technical issues.

Speaker A

You, it was, there was no end game whatsoever really.

Speaker A

It kind of got boring after a while.

Speaker A

And then you had Battlefield 2042, which you originally wanted to do a lot, a live service battle royale and then switch midstream to just be what Battlefield was.

Speaker A

And then people were like, what is this?

Speaker A

This isn't Battlefield.

Speaker A

This is kind of like a knockoff Battlefield.

Speaker A

And then again, you finally released Dragon Age Vale Guard, which was originally Dragon Age Dreadwolf, which originally was a live service game and then changed to an rpg and then kind of hodgepodge together with different design philosophies and just a spectacularly bad writing which bioware is renowned for their right or was renowned for their writing.

Speaker A

And it seemed like you had the F team just write it and then you had to pull the Bravo, which was kind of this woke messaging behind it where people like what is this?

Speaker A

And so yes, this is a desperate attempt for a company to save itself.

Speaker A

If you go private, then you don't have to worry about shareholders.

Speaker A

You have to worry about investment firms, which I don't know what's worse.

Speaker A

But you don't have to worry about that.

Speaker A

Plus, they're taking a $20 billion hit because they're investing in themselves.

Speaker A

So once that hits, then they're going to start looking at where they can cut, because they're eventually going to have to cut and they're not going to cut, really.

Speaker A

They may cut senior management, but they're probably not really going to be doing that.

Speaker A

They're going to be looking at developers and being like, okay, which ones are performing and if everything looks correct, Dice isn't going anywhere.

Speaker A

Respawn isn't going anywhere.

Speaker A

Even if Apex Legends isn't doing as well as it has before, it's still making a lot of money and their Star wars series is doing well.

Speaker A

And if Battlefield does well, they aren't being touched.

Speaker A

So the only one left to really look at is is Bioware.

Speaker A

And Bioware has not been doing well.

Speaker A

I know you have Mass Effect 5, and to be honest, if I was EA, I just sell them off.

Speaker A

Sell them off to a private equity firm or somebody else, have them deal with it because they seem like a headache.

Speaker A

A big, massive headache.

Speaker A

And it's a shame because I used to love Bioware games.

Speaker A

I played Valve, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2.

Speaker A

Yes, they were the first developer to bring it to computer or video games, I should say.

Speaker A

I loved.

Speaker A

Was it Dragon Empire?

Speaker A

Jade Empire?

Speaker A

The.

Speaker A

The.

Speaker A

That one I loved.

Speaker A

Never Winter Nights.

Speaker A

I loved Knights of Old Republic.

Speaker A

I thought two had a better writing.

Speaker A

Obsidian actually, when it was old school, Obsidian did a really good job with the writing.

Speaker A

Too bad it was cut, but it was.

Speaker A

Was really.

Speaker A

I thought it was better.

Speaker A

I loved Dragon Age Origins 2.

Speaker A

I liked because it was an interesting story.

Speaker A

And then Inquisition was still pretty good.

Speaker A

Wasn't bad, but you kind of saw the quality declining probably because the talent left.

Speaker A

Then you got Anthem, which, all right, that was our first mistake.

Speaker A

Then you had Dragon Age Vel Guard.

Speaker A

And I'm like, all right, I'm done.

Speaker A

No more.

Speaker A

Because I love I.

Speaker A

You can't forget Mass Effect.

Speaker A

Mass Effect, the original series, minus the ending of three was really, really good.

Speaker A

But that's the problem.

Speaker A

Like all the good writers and everybody else left and you had the not so good talent that was prioritizing political messaging and ideology that most people don't agree with.

Speaker A

And that was the problem.

Speaker A

But you kept on letting it go because they were successful developer that made very successful games.

Speaker A

I know their MMO for Star wars didn't do as well and that might have been their first mistake.

Speaker A

But it wasn't that bad.

Speaker A

What really hit them hard, what really made it worse was Anthem, because that's when it started all going downhill.

Speaker A

So what do you have?

Speaker A

You have a company that is bleeding money that is not doing well because they've had three failures of game that did not sell well.

Speaker A

Luckily, Battlefield 6 is turning it around.

Speaker A

Looks like it's going to be turning it around, but that's luckily because you had somebody specifically respawn and you gave them time to make the game that Battlefield needed.

Speaker A

Not trying to fit into this Live Service thing.

Speaker A

Andrew Wilson has so much to blame for all this direction that they've been trying to do because he was trying to cram in Live Service because he thought Live Service was like the next big thing.

Speaker A

And it really wasn't.

Speaker A

And so instead of making the games that people have grown to love, they tried to fit into Live Service and Battle Royales.

Speaker A

And I know Battlefield 6 might have a Battle Royale, but it's still separate.

Speaker A

So they had an opportunity to sell the game and go private.

Speaker A

This is a d desperate attempt to save the company.

Speaker A

They may not say that, but it is an attempt to save the company.

Speaker A

Michael Dell did it with Dell, they went public.

Speaker A

I mean, went private.

Speaker A

And he kind of brought it back as a public company, but he had to bring it back to fix things.

Speaker A

This is a way of fixing it, because it has to be fixed.

Speaker A

EA is not doing well asides from their yearly sports franchises and maybe soon yearly Battlefield franchise, which I'm not looking forward to.

Speaker A

There needs to be the writing of the ship because the ship has gone off course.

Speaker A

So Bioware, you can either get on board and make sure you're making a game that people love, or you can keep on with your very progressive messaging and piss a bunch of people off.

Speaker A

That won't buy your game.

Speaker A

It is your choice.

Speaker A

I forgot Mass Effect.

Speaker A

New Drama.

Speaker A

That was the other one.

Speaker A

So actually was Mass Effect Andromeda.

Speaker A

That was her first big mistake.

Speaker A

Totally forgot about that one.

Speaker A

Yeah, A memory.

Speaker A

Hold it.

Speaker A

Because it was not that good.

Speaker A

Mass Effect and Drama, I mean, the combat was good, but it just.

Speaker A

The story was okay.

Speaker A

Didn't really matter too much about what she did.

Speaker A

It was just so.

Speaker A

That one was the first because that happened after the Inquisition.

Speaker A

And then it was Anthem and then it was Veil Card.

Speaker A

So they had three Miss misses.

Speaker A

I mean, Andromeda was salvageable, but they just never really salvaged it because EA's thing is up.

Speaker A

Didn't work out.

Speaker A

Let's try to fix it and Then we're done.

Speaker A

Except for Anthem because we never allowed it to be fixed.

Speaker A

So if you're all worried about it, well yeah, you should be worried because again they're going to have cuts, no doubt about that.

Speaker A

It's just not going to hit until probably the end of the financial year for them in 2027.

Speaker A

They're more than likely going to get rid of your most toxic brands or the most toxic game franchises that don't work.

Speaker A

Either completely gone or they're going to completely retool it.

Speaker A

I propose you reboot Dragon Age.

Speaker A

Start from.

Speaker A

Start from Origins, figure out what that did so well and then build off from that.

Speaker A

Completely redo it because it just needs a reboot now.

Speaker A

Bill Guard just was not it.

Speaker A

So it just needs a complete and utter reboot of the entire franchise.

Speaker A

Go back to Origins, see what you did.

Speaker A

Just remake that one.

Speaker A

See what you did well.

Speaker A

See and look at what Boulders Gate 3 did so well and Expedition 33 did.

Speaker A

And figure out a way of making a really successful RPG because there's still a lot of people that love playing these games.

Speaker A

And then look your Mass Effect franchise.

Speaker A

Look at intact.

Speaker A

Maybe even figure out if you can actually reboot Andromeda.

Speaker A

Don't think you can.

Speaker A

I think that's just kind of a dead thing.

Speaker A

But figure out that franchise.

Speaker A

Look at the other franchises that BioWare has done.

Speaker A

I would probably just not touch Anthem at all.

Speaker A

But focus on, for Bioware, focus on Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

Speaker A

This probably should be the two primary franchises they could, they should work on.

Speaker A

I don't care if EA just didn't have any belief in it.

Speaker A

There is room for both to grow then for Dice Battlefield for Respawn.

Speaker A

I really wish they would bring Titanfall, but I don't think we're ever gonna get a Titanfall to be honest with you.

Speaker A

Which is a shame because it's a really good franchise.

Speaker A

Focus on Apex Legends, focus on Star wars games.

Speaker A

Eventually that's gonna end because it's only gonna really be a three game type of thing.

Speaker A

Focus on ex, like exploratory other type of games.

Speaker A

But yeah, that's a, that's what it should do.

Speaker A

Look at the strategies games, look at the genre of it.

Speaker A

See if you can actually reboot Command Conquer.

Speaker A

It's not a bad franchise to reboot people.

Speaker A

People like me love Command Conquer.

Speaker A

So look at that.

Speaker A

See if you can do anything with it.

Speaker A

Just look at your old franchise.

Speaker A

You got the Syndicate.

Speaker A

I mean you have a lot of good storied franchises that you should look again and see what you could do with them because you have a lot of them.

Speaker A

Just don't.

Speaker A

Just stop creating and don't stop trying to do it.

Speaker A

I know you have the sims, but I don't care about the sims.

Speaker A

It's probably popular, but I still don't care about it.

Speaker A

Anyways, we should all be concerned because this is a major deal and I hope they write the ship.

Speaker A

If not, well, it's been a good run ea.

Speaker A

Anyways, what do you think about the EA buyout or even the game pass pricing changes?
